FAQ

Who goes to psychotherapy?

Contrary to the stereotypes, it is generally those who are goal-oriented and focused on finding solutions to their problems who choose to go to therapy. For some people, specific issues like depression or anxiety prompt the decision to seek therapy. For others, life transitions such as moving, changing careers or starting or ending relationships may prompt people to seek help. For some people, current life circumstances may trigger unusually strong reactions that are sometimes connected to past traumatic experiences.

I’ve been to a therapist who insisted on continuing therapy when I felt I was “done.” How do I know that won’t happen again?

I see the measure of my success as a therapist in making myself redundant. The best time to stop is when you feel you have gotten what you want out of therapy.

How long will therapy take?

The length of therapy varies, since it depends on the issues that bring you to therapy, the severity of your disturbance and other factors.

Do I have to come every week?

Most people find it helpful to come weekly for the first month, but often choose to come less frequently as they begin to experience relief.

How is IFS different from other forms of therapy?

IFS offers a positive view of the individual which builds on your strengths rather than identifying “pathology.” Unlike some other methods of therapy which tend to reject or label parts of your personality, IFS welcomes all your feelings, thoughts or other experiences. Another feature of IFS is the concept of Self, which is different for everyone and can represent your best adult self, your wise mind or your spirit or soul. IFS helps you to access “Self” and enlists it to help the healing process.

How much will it cost?

My fee is $180 for a 50 minute session. If you have out of network benefits you would pay up front for your sessions and then get reimbursed by your insurance company. I will provide you with a detailed bill to submit to your insurers. I do not bill insurance directly. To get the specifics of your policy, call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card.  A sliding scale is available under certain circumstances.

What forms of payment do you accept?

I accept cash, checks, and most major credit cards.

May I meet you before committing to treatment?

Yes. I offer a free 20 minute phone or Skype consultation for potential clients who would like to meet me before scheduling the initial session.

When do you see clients?

Weekdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm. Early morning sessions or evenings can be scheduled upon request.

How is therapy different from talking with my best friend or a trusted family member?

1) Therapy is completely confidential. I never reveal your information unless you specifically authorize me to do so.

2) I am trained to listen to you not only with compassion but through a very deliberate and disciplined framework that helps me to remain objective. If I sense that my objectivity is wavering, I will say so and make every effort to correct my course; I encourage you give me feedback if you have any doubts or concerns about our work together. It is not my agenda, but yours, together with my training and experience that determines the course of therapy.
